Surviving the Genocide

In April 1994, Rwanda descended into chaos as extremist Hutu militias launched a systematic campaign of violence against Tutsi civilians. Patrick, a Tutsi, was just 11 years old when his family was targeted. He witnessed his parents and siblings being brutally murdered, and narrowly escaped death himself by hiding in a neighbor's attic.

For 100 terrifying days, Patrick remained trapped in the attic, subsisting on whatever scraps of food he could find. He witnessed the genocide unfold outside his hiding place, the sounds of gunshots and screams haunting his days and nights.

The Long Road to Recovery

When the genocide finally ended, Patrick emerged from his hiding place a broken and traumatized boy. He had lost everything - his family, his home, his sense of security. With the help of a local charity, he was eventually reunited with a distant relative and began the long road to recovery.

Patrick realized that education was his only hope for a better future. He excelled in school, despite the challenges he faced. He was determined to break free from the cycle of violence and poverty that had plagued Rwanda for so long.

Advocate for Peace

As he grew older, Patrick's experiences during the genocide inspired him to become an advocate for peace. He founded the "Peace Players International" organization, which uses sports to bring together children from different backgrounds and promote understanding and reconciliation. Patrick believes that education and collaboration are essential for preventing future genocides.

Global Advocate for Education

In addition to his work for peace, Patrick is also a passionate advocate for education. He believes that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves access to quality education. He has spoken at numerous international conferences, calling for greater investment in education and support for vulnerable communities.

Recognition and Awards

Patrick Tabaro's extraordinary journey has earned him recognition and awards from around the world. In 2015, he was named a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum. He has also received the "Nelson Mandela Changemaker Award" and the "Global Citizen Award."
