A History of Advocacy

Rolling Thunder's origins can be traced back to May 1987, when a group of Vietnam veterans rode their motorcycles to Washington, D.C., to protest the government's inaction on the issue of POWs and MIAs. The ride, known as "Rolling Thunder," was inspired by the sounds of thunder created by the motorcycles as they rode in formation.

The first Rolling Thunder ride was a success, attracting thousands of participants and gaining national attention. The event has grown significantly over the years, with an estimated 300,000 motorcycles participating in the 2019 ride.

Rolling Thunder has been instrumental in raising awareness of the issue of POWs and MIAs. The organization has lobbied Congress, met with government officials, and organized numerous protests and rallies. Their efforts have helped to bring about significant changes in U.S. policy, including the establishment of the POW/MIA Accounting Agency and the creation of a task force to investigate the fate of missing service members.

Expanding Mission

In addition to its work on behalf of POWs and MIAs, Rolling Thunder has expanded its mission to include a wide range of veteran support programs. The organization provides financial assistance, housing, medical care, and counseling to veterans in need.

Rolling Thunder also works to combat homelessness among veterans. The organization has established a network of shelters and transitional housing programs across the country, providing a safe and stable environment for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Foster Healing, End Indifference

One of the most important goals of Rolling Thunder is to foster healing among Vietnam veterans and their families. The organization provides opportunities for veterans to connect with others who have shared their experiences and to receive support and understanding.

Rolling Thunder Today

Rolling Thunder remains a vibrant and active organization today. The annual ride to Washington, D.C., continues to be a major event, drawing thousands of participants from across the country. In addition to its advocacy work, Rolling Thunder continues to provide a wide range of support programs for veterans and their families.

The organization's efforts have made a significant impact on the lives of Vietnam veterans and their families. Rolling Thunder has helped to raise awareness of the plight of POWs and MIAs, provided financial and other support to veterans in need, and fostered healing and understanding. As the organization continues its work, it continues to stoke the flames of advocacy and ensure that the sacrifices of veterans are never forgotten.
