Early life and education

Jean Langlais was born on February 15, 1907, in La Fontenelle, France. He began studying the organ at an early age, and by the time he was 12 years old, he was giving concerts. In 1927, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Marcel Dupré and Charles-Marie Widor. He graduated in 1930 with first prize in organ.

Career

After graduating from the Paris Conservatoire, Langlais began his career as an organist. He held positions at several churches in Paris, including the Church of Saint-Clotilde and the Church of Saint-Sulpice. He also toured extensively, giving concerts throughout Europe and North America.

In addition to his performing career, Langlais was also a prolific composer. He wrote over 500 works for organ, as well as chamber music, orchestral music, and vocal music. His music is characterized by its use of complex harmonies, rich textures, and evocative melodies. He was also a master of improvisation, and his improvisations were often praised for their beauty and originality.

Later years and legacy

Langlais retired from performing in 1987, but he continued to compose and teach until his death in 1991. He was a major influence on a generation of organists and composers, and his music continues to be performed and recorded today.

Langlais was a unique and gifted musician. His music is full of beauty, passion, and spirituality. He was a true master of the organ, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.
