Ambrose begins by tracing Eisenhower's early life and education. Born in Denison, Texas, in 1890, Eisenhower grew up in a poor family. He attended West Point Military Academy and graduated in 1915. After serving in World War I, Eisenhower rose through the ranks of the U.S. Army. In 1942, he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. Under Eisenhower's leadership, the Allied forces launched the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. The invasion was a success, and it helped to turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies.

After the war, Eisenhower served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. In 1952, he was elected President of the United States. As President, Eisenhower oversaw the end of the Korean War and the beginning of the Cold War. He also signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which outlawed segregation in public places. Eisenhower left office in 1961, and he died in 1969.

Ambrose's biography of Eisenhower is a masterful work of scholarship. Ambrose draws on a wide range of sources, including Eisenhower's personal papers, interviews with his family and friends, and declassified government documents. The result is a comprehensive and nuanced portrait of one of the most important figures in American history.

Eisenhower: Soldier and President is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, World War II, or the presidency. Ambrose's clear and engaging writing style makes this book accessible to readers of all levels. Eisenhower's story is one of courage, leadership, and determination.
