Early Life

Cleopatra was born in 69 BC to Ptolemy XII Auletes, the king of Egypt. Her mother was Cleopatra V Tryphaena, the daughter of Ptolemy IX Lathyros. Cleopatra was the youngest of her father's three children, and she had two older sisters, Berenice IV and Arsinoe IV.

Cleopatra's early life was marked by political turmoil. Her father was overthrown by the Roman general Pompey in 58 BC, and Cleopatra and her family were forced to flee to Rome. They returned to Egypt in 55 BC after Pompey's defeat at the Battle of Pharsalus, but Ptolemy XII died shortly thereafter, leaving Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII as joint rulers.

Reign

Cleopatra's reign was marked by a number of significant events. In 48 BC, she formed an alliance with Julius Caesar, the Roman dictator. Caesar helped Cleopatra to defeat her brother Ptolemy XIII, and he made her the sole ruler of Egypt. Cleopatra and Caesar had a son together, Ptolemy XV Caesarion, who was born in 47 BC.

After Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Cleopatra allied herself with Mark Antony, one of Caesar's generals. Antony and Cleopatra had a son together, Alexander Helios, who was born in 40 BC. Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian, Caesar's adopted son, at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Cleopatra committed suicide in 30 BC, and Egypt became a province of the Roman Empire.
