The battle took place on January 22-23, 1879, during the Anglo-Zulu War. A British column under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Evelyn Wood had been dispatched to relieve the besieged British garrison at Rorke's Drift. However, Wood's column was ambushed by the Zulu army at the Battle of Isandlwana, and the British were routed.

Meanwhile, at Rorke's Drift, a small garrison of 139 British soldiers under the command of Lieutenant John Chard was preparing to defend the outpost. The outpost was poorly fortified, and the soldiers were outnumbered by the Zulu army by more than 30 to 1.

The Zulus launched their attack at around 4:00 PM on January 22. The British soldiers fought bravely, but they were quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of Zulu warriors. By nightfall, the Zulus had breached the perimeter of the outpost and were fighting hand-to-hand with the British soldiers.

Despite the desperate odds, the British soldiers refused to surrender. They fought on until the early hours of the morning, when the Zulu army finally withdrew. By the end of the battle, 11 British soldiers had been killed and another 13 wounded. The Zulu army had lost over 300 warriors.

The Battle of Rorke's Drift was a remarkable victory for the British. It was one of the few times in history that a small group of soldiers was able to defeat a much larger army. The battle is still studied today as an example of courage and resilience.
