Early Life and Education

Dr. Nwafor Orizu was born on August 18, 1914, in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria. He received his early education at the Church Missionary Society (CMS) Central School, Onitsha, and later attended the Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar. In 1939, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, and in 1942, a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University. Orizu continued his academic pursuits and obtained a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of London in 1948.

Political Career

Dr. Orizu's political career began in the 1940s when he joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). He played a significant role in the struggle for Nigerian independence from British colonial rule. In 1959, he was elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Nnewi South constituency.

After Nigeria's independence in 1960, Orizu served in various ministerial positions, including as Minister of State for Education (1960-1964) and Minister of Mines and Power (1964-1965). He was also the President of the Senate from 1960 to 1965.

Acting Presidency

On October 16, 1965, Dr. Nwafor Orizu became the Acting President of Nigeria following the military coup that led to the overthrow of President Nnamdi Azikiwe. As Acting President, Orizu's mandate was to ensure a smooth transition to civilian rule, maintain law and order, and negotiate with the military junta.

Orizu's tenure as Acting President was marked by political uncertainty and diplomatic challenges. He faced pressure from the military junta to endorse their regime and from political parties demanding a return to civilian rule. Orizu navigated these complexities with diplomacy and a commitment to national unity.

Return to the Senate

On January 15, 1966, Dr. Orizu handed over power to General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, who became the Head of State of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. Orizu returned to his role as President of the Senate and remained a vocal critic of the military regime.

In 1967, when the Biafran secessionist movement erupted in Eastern Nigeria, Orizu played a key role in advocating for a peaceful resolution and the preservation of Nigerian unity. He remained a respected and influential figure in post-war Nigeria.
