Early Life and Career

Elijah Muhammad was born Elijah Poole in Sandersville, Georgia, in 1897. He grew up in a poor family, and he had little formal education. In his early 20s, he moved to Detroit, where he worked in a variety of jobs. In 1930, he met Wallace Fard Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam. Fard Muhammad taught Elijah Muhammad about the history of Islam and the plight of black people in America. Elijah Muhammad became a devoted follower of Fard Muhammad, and he soon rose to become one of the most prominent leaders of the Nation of Islam.

Leader of the Nation of Islam

In 1934, Fard Muhammad disappeared, and Elijah Muhammad took over as the leader of the Nation of Islam. Under Elijah Muhammad's leadership, the Nation of Islam grew rapidly. Muhammad preached a message of black separatism and self-reliance. He taught that black people were the original inhabitants of the Earth and that they had been enslaved by white people. Muhammad urged black people to reject white society and to establish their own independent nation.

Elijah Muhammad was a controversial figure. He was often accused of being racist and anti-Semitic. However, he was also a powerful advocate for black people. He helped to raise black consciousness and he inspired many black people to fight for their rights.

The Civil Rights Movement

Elijah Muhammad played a significant role in the civil rights movement. He was a vocal critic of the white power structure, and he urged black people to stand up for their rights. Muhammad's teachings inspired many young black activists, including Malcolm X. Malcolm X was a prominent member of the Nation of Islam, and he became one of the most influential leaders of the civil rights movement.

Elijah Muhammad's influence on the civil rights movement was complex. He preached a message of black separatism, but he also encouraged black people to stand up for their rights. His teachings inspired many black activists, and he helped to raise black consciousness. However, his anti-white rhetoric also alienated some potential allies.

Later Years and Death

In the late 1960s, Elijah Muhammad began to mellow his rhetoric. He began to talk more about the need for black and white people to work together to achieve racial equality. However, he continued to be a controversial figure, and he was criticized by some for being too willing to compromise with white society.

Elijah Muhammad died in 1975. He was succeeded by his son, Wallace Muhammad. Wallace Muhammad led the Nation of Islam for over 20 years. He continued to preach his father's message of black separatism. However, he also began to emphasize the importance of education and economic development. Under Wallace Muhammad's leadership, the Nation of Islam became more mainstream.

Legacy

Elijah Muhammad was a complex and controversial figure. He was a powerful advocate for black people, but he was also a proponent of black separatism. His legacy is still being debated today. Some people argue that he was a racist and anti-Semite. Others argue that he was a visionary leader who helped to raise black consciousness. Ultimately, Elijah Muhammad's legacy is complex and contested, but he undoubtedly had a profound impact on the civil rights movement and on the development of black consciousness in America.
