Early Life and Career

Bloomberg was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts. His father, William Henry Bloomberg, was a milkman, and his mother, Charlotte Rubens Bloomberg, was a bookkeeper. Bloomberg attended Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he worked as a systems engineer for IBM. In 1973, he joined Salomon Brothers, a Wall Street investment bank.

Bloomberg quickly rose through the ranks at Salomon Brothers, becoming a general partner in 1981. In 1982, he was fired from the firm after a power struggle with the company's CEO. Bloomberg founded his own financial data and media company, Bloomberg L.P., in 1987.

Bloomberg L.P. quickly became one of the leading providers of financial data and news to Wall Street professionals. The company's flagship product, the Bloomberg Terminal, is used by traders, analysts, and portfolio managers around the world. Bloomberg L.P. has also expanded into other areas, including media, education, and philanthropy.

Mayor of New York City

Bloomberg entered the world of politics in the early 2000s. In 2001, he ran for mayor of New York City as a Republican. He won the election and took office in 2002. Bloomberg was re-elected in 2005 and again in 2009. He was the first Republican to be elected mayor of New York City in more than 20 years.

As mayor, Bloomberg focused on improving the city's economy, education system, and public health. He oversaw the city's recovery from the 9/11 terrorist attacks and implemented a number of initiatives to make the city more livable, including the creation of new parks and green spaces. Bloomberg also took a strong stance on gun control and climate change.

Bloomberg's tenure as mayor was not without controversy. He was criticized for his handling of Hurricane Sandy, his support for the stop-and-frisk policy, and his efforts to ban large sugary drinks. However, he left office with high approval ratings and is generally considered to have been a successful mayor.

Post-Mayoral Life

After leaving office in 2013, Bloomberg remained active in public life. He founded Bloomberg Philanthropies, a charitable foundation that supports a variety of causes, including education, public health, and the arts. Bloomberg has also been a vocal advocate for climate change action.

In 2020, Bloomberg briefly ran for the Democratic nomination for president. He dropped out of the race after a disappointing showing in the early primaries. Bloomberg has since endorsed Joe Biden for president.

Legacy

Michael Bloomberg is a complex and controversial figure. He is a self-made billionaire who has achieved great success in both business and politics. He is also a philanthropist and activist who has dedicated his life to making the world a better place.

Bloomberg's legacy is still being written. However, there is no doubt that he is one of the most influential figures of his generation. He has made a significant impact on the world of finance, politics, and philanthropy.
