Early life and Revolutionary War service

Edward Wemple Clark was born on December 17, 1738, in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He was the son of John Clark and Elizabeth Wemple. Clark's father was a farmer and a prominent citizen in Elizabethtown. Clark received a good education and was well-versed in the classics. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1760.

In 1775, Clark moved to Kentucky with his family. He settled in the area that is now Clark County, Kentucky.
