Early Life and Education

Chen Guangcheng was born in 1964 in a poor village in Shandong Province, China. He was blinded at the age of six when he was accidentally poked in the eyes by a needle. Despite his disability, Chen Guangcheng was a bright and determined student. He learned to read and write using braille, and he excelled in his studies.

In 1980, Chen Guangcheng passed the entrance exam for the Shandong University of Political Science and Law. However, he was denied admission because of his blindness. Undeterred, Chen Guangcheng continued to study on his own. He eventually became a self-taught lawyer.

Chen Guangcheng began to speak out against these abuses. He wrote letters to government officials and gave interviews to foreign journalists. In 2005, Chen Guangcheng was arrested and sentenced to four years and three months in prison. He was charged with "disrupting public order" and "inciting subversion."

While in prison, Chen Guangcheng was tortured and beaten. He was also denied medical care. Despite the harsh conditions, Chen Guangcheng never gave up hope. He continued to speak out against human rights abuses, and he organized protests among his fellow prisoners.

In 2006, Chen Guangcheng was released from prison. However, he was not allowed to return to his village. He was placed under house arrest in Beijing.

While under house arrest, Chen Guangcheng continued to work for human rights. He established the New Citizens Movement, a group that advocates for democratic reforms and human rights in China. Chen Guangcheng also wrote a book about his experiences, titled "The Barefoot Lawyer."

Escape from House Arrest

In 2012, Chen Guangcheng escaped from house arrest. He fled to the United States, where he was granted political asylum.

Since arriving in the United States, Chen Guangcheng has continued to advocate for human rights in China. He has spoken at numerous events and given interviews to media outlets around the world. He has also met with government officials and urged them to pressure China to improve its human rights record.
