Pablo Neruda was born Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto on July 12, 1904, in Parral, Chile. His father, José del Carmen Reyes Morales, was a railway worker, and his mother, Trinidad Candia Marverde, was a schoolteacher. Neruda's parents separated when he was young, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather.

Neruda began writing poetry at a young age. His first poem, "Oda a la primavera" ("Ode to Spring"),was published in a local newspaper when he was just 13 years old. In 1921, Neruda published his first book of poetry, Crepusculario ("Twilight").
