Early Life and Education

Henry John Cody was born in Toronto, Ontario, on May 6, 1868. He was the son of Edward Cody, a successful businessman, and Elizabeth Cody. Cody attended Upper Canada College in Toronto and then Trinity College at the University of Toronto. He graduated from Trinity College in 1890 with a degree in theology.

Ordination and Early Ministry

After graduating from Trinity College, Cody was ordained a deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada in 1890 and a priest in 1891. He served as curate at St. James' Cathedral in Toronto from 1890 to 1893. In 1893, he was appointed rector of St. Paul's Church in Toronto, where he served until 1902.

Bishop of Qu'Appelle

In 1902, Cody was elected Bishop of Qu'Appelle, a diocese in Saskatchewan. He served as Bishop of Qu'Appelle for 11 years, during which time he oversaw the growth of the diocese and the establishment of new parishes and schools.

Archbishop of Toronto

In 1913, Cody was elected Archbishop of Toronto, a position he held until his death in 1950. As Archbishop of Toronto, Cody was a leading figure in the Anglican Church of Canada and played a significant role in Canadian society. He was a strong advocate for social justice and education, and he worked to promote interfaith understanding.

Theology

Cody was a gifted theologian and a prolific writer. He wrote numerous books and articles on a wide range of theological topics. Cody's theology was influenced by the liberal theology of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He believed that God was immanent in the world and that human beings were called to work together to create a just and peaceful society.

Education

Cody was a strong supporter of education. He served as Chancellor of the University of Toronto from 1924 to 1945. He also played a key role in the establishment of Wycliffe College, a theological college affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Social Justice

Cody was a tireless advocate for social justice. He was a strong supporter of the labour movement and he worked to promote the rights of women and minorities. He also spoke out against poverty and inequality.

Interfaith Understanding

Cody was a pioneer in the field of interfaith understanding. He was a founding member of the Canadian Council of Churches and he worked to promote dialogue and cooperation between different religious groups.

Legacy

Henry John Cody was one of the most important figures in the history of the Anglican Church of Canada. He was a gifted theologian, a wise pastor, and a tireless advocate for social justice. His legacy continues to inspire and challenge Christians today.
